Kenya:
Land of the Maasai |
|
10
Days--Kenya Safari with Private Guide
Offered
Year Round or for Private Groups of 2 or More

Kenya
is homeland of the Maasai, a semi-nomadic African tribe.
The tall and slender Maasai wear bright cloth dyed in
vivid shades of red and blue and they stand out noble
against the stark landscape.
Our “Land of the Maasai” ten day safari features
several famous national parks, which are some of the best
locations to observe the rich diversity of African
wildlife and culture. Stay for two nights on the edge of
the Amboseli National Game Reserve in the shadow of Mt.
Kilimanjaro and continue on safari to Meru National Park
where game drives are held in open safari vehicles. Guided
nature walks, night game drives, rafting on the Tana
River, bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners will all
reveal the timeless splendor of Africa to its visitors.
End this enchanting African adventure in the magical Masai
Mara where guests can reside in harmony with the Maasai
warriors.

Day
1 - NAIROBI
On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International
Airport, you will be met by a Cheli & Peacock representative who will
assist you in your transfer to the Ngong House. The evening is yours to
relax and enjoy your new surroundings. Ngong House is a private home
situated on the outskirts of Langata, approximately half an hour from
Nairobi City Center. Far from main roads and secluded in ten acres of
private land, with a stunning view of the Ngong Hills, Ngong House offers
personalized service and exclusive accommodation consisting of five
“tree houses” and one apartment close to the swimming pool. Overnight
at the Ngong House
Day 2 - NAIROBI to AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
|
In the morning, transfer to the Wilson
Airport for a flight to Amboseli National Park. Upon arrival in Amboseli,
you will transfer to your accommodations at Tortilis Camp.
Located on the
edge of the Amboseli National Game Reserve in the shadow of Mt.
Kilimanjaro, Tortilis accommodates thirty guests in fifteen thatch-roofed
tents: seven twins and eight doubles, each with en suite WC and hot-water
shower.
One of Kenya's newest camps, Tortilis won the
1995 British Airways 'Tourism for Tomorrow' award. Amboseli National Park
is home to over 1,000 elephants, rare black rhino and herds of zebra,
wildebeest and their attendant predators. This is an ideal base from which
to explore the wildlife bounty. Your first dinner in camp will remind you
that Tortilis has Italian origins: homemade pastas, fresh herbs and
vegetables are specialties here. Overnight at Tortilis Camp (B,L,D)
|
Day 3 - AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
The great Amboseli plains, with its
parched alkaline salt pans, strange mirages and oasis of marshes and lakes
are dominated by the glistening majestic snow cap of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The
Chyulu Hills are the natural border between the Maasai and the Kamba
people and perfect for walking and riding safaris. On the far side of the
hills lies the Tsavo National Park, bigger than Wales and one of the
world’s largest game sanctuaries. This is Maasai country, where proud,
nomadic people have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Huge herds
of elephant and buffalo are common, together with lion and a host of
antelope species.
Enjoy varied game viewing and spend time
following the matriarchal elephant herds from the luxury of open sided
safari Land Rovers; or walk with a trained Maasai guide, sip sundowners on
top of Kitirua hill as the sun sets coloring the snows of Kilimanjaro
pink, enjoy bush breakfasts out on the plains or a visit to one of the
Maasai manyattas (villages) to meet the Maasai women, watch the Morans
(young warriors) dance and experience their age-old existence. Overnight
at Tortilis Camp (B,L,D)
Day 4 - AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK to MERU NATIONAL PARK
This morning after breakfast, depart
Amboseli National Park and connect with your flight to Wilson Airport.
Upon arrival in Wilson, connect with another flight to Nanyuki. Upon
arrival at Nanyuki, guests will board a private charter to Meru National
Park. Upon arrival in Meru, transfer to your accommodations at Elsa’s
Kopje.
Meru National Park, in the old Northern Frontier District, is wild Africa
at its most alluring. The animals are shy and unused to their human
counterparts. Here we have established a private hideaway perched on top
of Mugwongo Hill, the site of George Adamson’s first camp. Elsa’s
Kopje is located within the Meru National Park – northeast of Nairobi
(seven miles north of the equator). The days are hot and the nights
pleasant. The lodge can be accessed by either road or charter flight.
Elsa’s Kopje has eight stone and thatched cottages all with en suite
facilities. Other facilities include a swimming pool and a gift shop. Game
drives are held in open safari vehicles; other options include guided
nature walks, night game drives, fishing, rafting on the Tana River, bush
breakfasts, picnics and sundowners. Overnight at Elsa’s Kopje (B,L,D)
|
Day
5 – MERU NATIONAL PARK
Activities include game drives in
open-sided safari Land Rovers, driven by knowledgeable
driver-guides, all members of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides
Association. Guided walks are led by a Professional Safari Guide
and accompanied by a Ranger. Other attractions include bush
breakfasts, sundowners and visits to the Tharaka tribal village on
the southern boundary of the park. Overnight at Elsa’s Kopje (B,L,D)
|
 |
Day 6 – MERU NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy the activities available at
Elsa’s Kopje. Overnight at Elsa’s Kopje (B,L,D)
Day 7 – MERU NATIONAL PARK to MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
This morning, linger over breakfast
before departing on a flight from Meru to Samburu, continuing on to the
Masai Mara. Upon arrival in the Masai Mara you will be transferred to your
accommodations at Saruni Camp. Saruni is the new, deluxe and intimate
tented lodge set in a private conservation area outside the Masai Mara
Game Reserve. With accommodation for only 12 guests in six spectacular
tented cottages, it is set in a remote valley at the heart of the most
exciting wilderness of Kenya. Saruni offers a new concept of African
safari: the thrill of a real African adventure lived in harmony with the
Maasai warriors coupled with high standards of style and comfort. The
tents are furnished with colonial antiques, Persian carpets and African
art. The atmosphere at the camp is informal but elegant.
Guests will be able to explore the plains, mountains and rivers of the
Mara aboard open Land Rovers and on foot, walking with guides and Masai
trackers. It is the new Masai Mara without the minibuses but with the
small luxuries that have always been part of the old safari. Overnight at
Saruni Camp (B,L,D)
|
Day 8 - MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
Enjoy game drives in comfortable,
fully-open Land Rovers that are designed to give you maximum visibility
over the landscape and the wildlife. On foot safaris, you will explore the
plains and the mountains led by a professional guide and by a tracker.
Take your time while on safari and observe the animals and their habitats.
Experience the Masai Mara as the first hunters and explorers saw it. Deep
in the forest or by the river Mara overlooking a 'hippo beach', a nicely
decorated table is waiting, providing you with the thrilling experience of
a gourmet meal in the middle of nature. Overnight at Saruni Camp (B,L,D) |
Day 9 – MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
The Masai Mara National reserve of Kenya covers
more than 400,000 acres and is situated between 1,500 and 2,100 meters
above sea level. It is part of the Serengeti ecosystem that extends from
northern Tanzania into southern Kenya. Around the Masai Mara National
Reserve there are several 'group ranches' or ancestral wildlife areas
owned collectively by the Masai communities. The Lemek-Koyiaki Group
Ranch, in which Saruni is set, has an area of 368,000 acres and its
natural treasures are managed by the several trusts set up and managed by
the Masai people.
The Masai Mara region is considered the jewel of African wildlife and
nowhere on the continent can you find the same abundance and variety of
wild animals. It is also a prime area for ornithologists and hundreds of
different species have been recorded. The area is teeming with herbivores
that, in turn, support large numbers of predators. Millions of wildebeest,
gazelle, zebra, buffalo, impala, topi, hartebeest, giraffe, eland,
elephant, dik-dik, hippo and warthog live their natural lifecycle
alongside the largest population of lions in Kenya together with cheetah,
leopard, hyena and jackal. The Mara is also one of the best wilderness
areas in Africa to observe rare species, like the rhino, the bat-eared fox
or the nocturnal wildlife, from the bushbaby to the genet. Overnight at
Saruni Camp (B,L,D)
Day 10 – MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE to NAIROBI
After breakfast today, connect with your
flight departing for Wilson Airport. Upon arrival at Wilson, you will be
transferred to the Ngong House for a day room. Transfer to the Jomo
Kenyatta International Airport for your outbound flight. Day room at Ngong
House (B)
